Jean Pizarro of Puerto Rico was crowned Pan American compound men’s champion in Santiago 2023.

This is the first major world title for Puerto Rico in archery.

“It’s a super big emotion and there are a lot of people to thank,” commented Pizarro, who thanked the Colombian team in particular with whom he trained prior to the competition in Chile.

Pizarro defeated top qualifier Kris Schaff of the United States in the quarterfinals before making it to the final for the gold.

In the gold final he faced another American, 19-year-old Sawyer Sullivan.

“It was a very stressful match,” commented Pizarro. “Sullivan is a very strong opponent and very young. He is definitely going to be Pan American champion at some point in time.”

Pizarro started with a one-point lead that he held until the second end.

In the third one, both archers were tied but in the fourth end Sullivan gained a point advantage.

The last end started abruptly for Sullivan with an 8 and ended the same way with a 9. Pizarro won the match with a one-point lead 145-144.

The bronze final featured Roberto Hernandez of El Salvador and Jagdeep Singh of Colombia. Singh took the medal 145-144.
