The Mexican recurve men’s team earned an Olympic quota this weekend at the final Olympic Games qualifier in Antalya, Turkey.
“We are very happy that this dream has come true,” commented Matias Grande.
Grande, Bruno Martinez Wing and Javier Rojas made up the Mexican team that defeated Great Britain for the Olympic spot in the semifinals.
The tricolor team had just defeated India in the quarterfinals in tiebreaker arrows before facing the British in the big decisive match.
Great Britain took the lead in the first set, but a 7- shot in the next two sets gave Mexico the advantage.
Mexico finished with 58 points in the final set, one point up on the British to win with a final score of 6-2.
“We had been dreaming about it” commented Martinez Wing. “It was a complicated season but the work was done and here we are.”
In the gold medal match, the Mexicans faced Chinese Taipei and won in the third set 5-1.
This will be the third Olympic Games in which Mexico participates with a full team, the two previous occasions being London 2012 and Munich 1972.
