Mexico’s Mariana Bernal won the gold medal in the compound women’s event after defeating her teammate Andrea Becerra in the Copa Merengue.

This competition was held from June 18 to 22 at Parque del Este in Santo Domingo, the future venue of the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games.

Although Bernal has been on the podium before in international competitions, especially in team competitions, this is the Mexican’s first individual victory.

The match started in favor of Becerra, current number one in the world ranking, with a perfect score.

However, in the second end, an 8-pointer put her under the scoreboard.

Bernal adjusted her sight and closed the match with two perfect scores in a row and a five-point difference 147-142.

In the compound men’s event, Jean Pizarro of Puerto Rico won the gold medal. He defeated Roberto Hernandez of El Salvador with a one-point difference 148-147.

In the recurve women’s competition, Alejandra Valencia took the victory 6 set points to 2 against her Mexican compatriot Valentina Vazquez.

Jorge Enriquez of Colombia and Hugo Franco of Cuba faced each other for the gold medal in the recurve men’s category in one of the most closely contested finals in Santo Domingo.

The match was defined in a tiebreaker arrow and although at the beginning Enriquez’s 9 seemed not to be enough to win the gold medal, it was more than enough against Franco’s 7.

The Merengue Cup also hosted the first qualifier for Santo Domingo 2026 where 64 spots were awarded.
