Archery will be at the South American Games in Asuncion 2022 from 1st to 5th October and these are 5 things you should know about these Games.
1. The South American Games
The South American Games is a multi-sport event that takes place every 4 years and is organized by the South American Sports Organization (ODESUR), which is affiliated to the International Olympic Committee. The first Games were held in 1978 in La Paz, Bolivia although at that time they were called the Cross of the South Games.
2. Asunción, Mother of Cities
The 2022 South American Games will be held in Asuncion, Paraguay. This is the first time in history that Paraguay will host the South American Games.
The city of Asunción was founded during Spanish colonialism in 1537. It is known as “the mother of cities” since it was the departure point for expeditions to the entire region for the founding of new colonies that gave rise to more than 70 cities in South America. Some examples are Buenos Aires and Santa Fe in Argentina, Santa Cruz de la Sierra Bolivia and Ciudad Real in Brazil.
3. Participating countries
The South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) was founded in 1976. It is the association of National Olympic Committees of South America, as well as some Central American and Caribbean countries. It is currently made up of 15 countries: Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Curacao, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Surinam, Uruguay and Venezuela.
In archery there will be participation from all these countries except Aruba, Guyana and Suriname.
4. Competition
Archery competitions will be held from October 1 to 5 at the Paraguayan Rugby Union Stadium, Héroes de Curupayty in the Olympic Park. Medals will be awarded for the individual competition of recurve and compound bows in the men’s and women’s categories, as well as the team competition in all categories and the mixed team competition.
5. Road to Santiago 2023
Asuncion 2022 is the first Regional Game that will give spots for the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023. A spot will be awarded to the winners of the gold medal in each of the individual categories.
The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games will be held from 1st to 5th November 2023.
