The next Pan American Games will be held in Santiago de Chile from October 20 to November 5, 2023. This is the most important multi-sport event in the Americas and is held every 4 years and will serve as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The best athletes from all over the continent will compete in 38 sports and one of them is archery. A total of 98 athletes equally distributed between men and women will compete in this discipline. For recurve bow there are 33 places and for compound bow 16, both men and women.

Unlike other editions, for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, Panam Sports together with the South American Sports Organization and Centro Caribe Sports decided to give more importance to the Regional Games. Thus, this time the Regional Games will also grant places for the Pan American Games, but this is not the only way to qualify.

Qualification System

There are 5 ways to qualify for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Cali Youth Games Champion

Last year the first Cali 2021 Youth Games were held in Colombia. The individual winners in each of the four categories, in addition to winning the gold medal, also won a place at the Pan American Games. Trenton Cowles (USA), Valentina Vázquez (Mexico), Sebastían García (Mexico) and Dafne Quintero (Mexico) have secured their tickets to Santiago as this is the only place awarded to the athlete and not to the country.

Host country

As the host country, Chile is guaranteed 3 places in both recurve men and women, plus one place in compound men and one place in compound women. This allows it to automatically participate in the recurve team competitions, but in order to participate in the compound team competitions, Chile has to be among the top 5 teams of the Pan American Championships.

Spots in Regional Games

There are three competitions that will function as regional qualifiers.

  • The first of these is the South American Games of Asuncion 2022, which will be held from October 1 to 15 in Paraguay. In these Games, one place in each category will be awarded to the winners of the gold medal.
  • The second Regional Games that will give places for the Pan American Games are the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador from June 23 to July 8, 2023. These Games will award one place in each category. In order to qualify for these places, the athlete must rank in the first 8 positions and not have won a ticket for his or her country in the Pan American Championships.
  • The third regional competition is the North American Qualifier. This qualifier is only for Canada and the United States and will be during a special event within the Pan American Championships. This special qualifier was made for these two countries because they do not participate in any of the other Regional Games. Only one place will be awarded in the recurve men and one in the recurve women as long as they have not previously won places during the Pan American Championships and are in the first 8 positions of the special event.

The countries that by geographic zone can participate in more than one of the Regional Games, must choose in which Regional Games they will compete for the spots. This is the case of Venezuela, Colombia and Curacao that will compete for the spots in the South American Games. It is also the case of Panama and Guyana, but these two countries chose the Central American and Caribbean Games to compete for spots.

Pan American Championships

The Pan American Championships, which will also be held in Santiago de Chile, will be the competition that will provide the largest number of places. The dates of this competition are November 21-27, 2022. There will be 18 places in recurve men, 18 in recurve women, 11 in compound men and 11 in compound women.

This is the main event to win recurve team places, five teams in total, but it is the only event to win compound team places, also five teams in each category.

Last qualifier

The last qualifier has no venue or date yet but it will be the last chance to win places for Santiago 2023. There will be 8 places in both recurve women and recurve men. Of these 8 places, 6 will be won in team competition. In the compound, one place will be given to women and one for men.

It is possible that more places may be added to the last qualifier if any places are returned in the regional qualifiers. If necessary World Archery will reallocate unused places to a National Olympic Committee that is on the alternate list after the last qualifier.

Paris 2024

The Santiago 2023 Pan American Games will also serve as a qualifier for the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024. An individual place will be awarded to the best placed in recurve men and the best placed in recurve women. In addition, a place will be given to the best mixed team.
