Rondon Wilkinson won the first gold medal in history for Trinidad and Tobago at the Pan American Championships.

This year’s Pan American Junior and Masters Championships were held in Medellín from May 24 to 28, featuring a total of 270 athletes from 16 countries.

Wilkinson faced Nathan Lee of the United States in the under-15 barebow final.

The match was predicted to be a close one when, in the first set, both archers tied at 28 points to earn a set point.

In the fourth set, Wilkinson took a two-point lead, but in the fifth and final set, Lee won the points and tied the overall score at 5-5.

One final arrow from each archer would decide the Pan American champion.

The American was the first to shoot, landing an 8 high to the right of the target face.

The Trinidadian needed a 9 to secure the victory; he shot and certainly delivered, landing a 9 to the left.

With this medal, Trinidad and Tobago moved into seventh place in the medal count.

The USA finished in first place with 31 medals and 11 golds, Mexico in second with 30 medals and 9 golds, and Colombia in third with 22 medals and 7 golds.
